Mission
The mission of Virginia School of Traditional Midwifery is to prepare midwives for practice in accordance with the Midwives Model of Care, the MANA Core Competencies, and NARM’s certification guidelines. We support the traditional apprenticeship model of midwifery training by encouraging learning opportunities within a community context and with the participation of experienced midwives as mentors and teachers.
Background
Virginia School of Traditional Midwifery was founded in 2010 in Gainesville, Virginia by Peggy Franklin, CPM and Kim Pekin, CPM to answer the need for formal academic study for student midwives pursuing the Certified Professional Midwife Credential. Peggy has hosted the Northern Virginia Midwifery Study Group, as well as trained several students who have gone on to become CPMs both through the PEP process and through MEAC-accredited midwifery schools. Kim was one of her students, completing her MEAC-accredited program and becoming a CPM in 2009. Together, they have developed a unique and comprehensive curriculum and learning venue for women on their path towards certification.
Accreditation
Virginia School of Traditional Midwifery is not a MEAC-accredited school. However, we are building the school with the intention of pursuing accreditation in the near future. The current Professional Midwifery Program is intended to support the didactic portion of the NARM PEP program, and may also be used to complement MEAC-accredited programs as well.
