THIRD YEAR PROGRAM


This year is devoted towards establishing competency in the role of the primary midwife.  The main focus during the third year is on completing the clinical training required for graduation, as well as the completion of the student’s Graduate Research Project, and preparation for independent practice through the development of practice guidelines and informed consent documents.  Before entering the third year of the program, the student will submit an application and intent to matriculate.  Approved students will be offered the opportunity to complete their clinical training at NOVA Natural Birth Center.

PRIMARY MIDWIFE UNDER SUPERVISION
  • Clinical Experiences:
    • Observe and assist clinical preceptor at least 8 hours per week, including:
      • 75 Prenatal Visits, including:
        • 20 Initial Prenatal Visits
        • 55 Other Prenatal Visits
      • 40 Postpartum Visits, including:
        • 20 postpartum visits within the first 3 days after the birth
        • 20 other postpartum visits
      • 25 Births, including:
        • All Primary Midwife Under Supervision Births will be planned out of hospital births
        • 5 home births
        • 5 water births
        • 10 Continuity of Care
        • No more than 2 hospital transports can count towards the 25 births
        • At least 10 of the births must have occurred during the last 3 years
      • 25 Initial Newborn Exams as Primary Midwife Under Supervision
  • Attend and present cases at a minimum of 2 peer review sessions
  • Job Shadowing with preceptor for two full weeks
  • Pass VSTM skills exam with a score of at least 90% (Distance Learning Program students may complete this exam with their approved clinical preceptor)
  • Complete graduation review
    • Submit Graduate Research Project and receive score of at least 90%
    • Receive written recommendations from at least two preceptors
    • Receive written approval of:
      • Practice guidelines
      • Informed consent documents
      • Completed NARM paperwork
